    Protein Summary

    The TM1049 gene from Thermotoga maritima encodes an endoglucanase E.C.3.2.1.4 COG3405 PF05343.  The enzyme belongs to a family of FrvX endoglucanases (cellulase M and related proteins).  The enzyme catalyzes the hydrolysis of 1,4-beta-D-glycosidic linkages in cellulose, lichenin and cereal beta-D-glucans.  In the case of cellulose, the enzyme complex breaks down cellulose to beta-glucose. This type of cellulase is produced mainly by symbiotic bacteria in the ruminating chambers of herbivores.
