    Protein Summary

    The gene BP2299 from Bordetella pertussis encodes a putative cupin domain PF07883. Analysis of its genome neighborhood shows the presence of the BP2298 protein, an aminobutyrate aminotransferase (score 0.75).

    The protein structure, 2fqp, belongs to the class of all beta proteins, and reveals double-stranded beta-helix fold type, from the RmlC-like cupins superfamily SCOP51181.  A DALI search returns as top hits the RPA4178 protein  PDB:3lag and PDB:2ozi (Z=18), the cupin TM1459 PDB:1vj2 (Z=11), and a putative sugar phosphate isomerase PDB:3l2h (Z=10). Many other cupin-like domain structures have been solved from different organisms like the Bacillus subtilis YxaG protein PDB:1y3t (Z=7.5). Each 2fqp chain chelates a Zn ion via the conserved triad H33, H35 and H76.

    The cupin domain is found in one or two copies in   proteins whose  functions  vary  from  isomerase  and epimerase activities involved in  the  modification of  cell  wall  carbohydrates  in bacteria, to  non-enzymatic storage proteins in plant seeds, and transcription factors linked  to  congenital  baldness  in mammals.
