    Protein Summary

    The AF1104 (NP_069933.1) gene from Archaeoglobus fulgidus encodes a protein of unknown function DUF89 PF01937.  The protein belongs to the class of multi-domain proteins (alpha and beta) and reveals AF1104-like fold type SCOP111320.  The structure of the protein contains two well-defined domain.  The C-terminal domain is an all-alpha 3-helical bundle, which is similar to  the immunoglobulin/albumin-binding domain-like fold SCOP46996.  The N-terminal domain in general looks similar in structure to the subunit of bacterial pilin family of proteins, although orientation of beta-sheets does not match 3JYZ.  Pilin is a component of pili.  Pili connect a bacterium to another of its species, or to another bacterium of a different species, and build a bridge between the interior of the cells. This enables the transfer of plasmids between the bacteria.

     

    Human homolog (Q9NVE7) is annotated as pantothenate kinase 4 (EC 2.7.1.33) as are other eukaryotic homologs, e.g. Q8L5Y9 in Arabidopsis thaliana and in Drosophila melanogaster. It has a lenght of more than 700 residues where from 35 to 370 resides the ROK kinase domain followed by the DUF89 (residues 450-760).

     

    DUF89 is fused with Fumble domain (PF03630) in 38 homologs (Pfam entries), putative phosphatase domain (PF06888) in 5 entries and other phosphatases (PF00316, PF00149) in 4 entries.
