    The TM1009 gene from Thermotoga maritima encodes a 2,5-diketo-D-gluconic acid reductase EC:1.1.1.21.  The enzyme belongs to aldo/keto reductase superfamily of soluble NAD(P)(H) oxidoreductases  PF00248 COG0656.  The catalyzed reaction is the reduction of aldehydes and ketones to primary and secondary alcohols. Members of the family have very distinct functions and include the prokaryotic 2,5-diketo-D-gluconic acid reductases and beta-keto ester reductases, the eukaryotic aldose reductases, aldehyde reductases, hydroxysteroid dehydrogenases, steroid 5-beta-reductases, potassium channel beta-subunits and aflatoxin aldehyde reductases, among others.
