    Protein Summary

    The gene NP_416953.1 from Escherichia coli encodes putative phosphotransacetylase COG0280 EC:2.3.1.8.  The protein belongs to the class of alpha and beta proteins (a+b) and reveals fold type characteristic of  phosphotransacetylases SCOP102663 PF01515.  The enzyme catalyzes the reversible transfer of the acetyl group from acetyl phosphate to coenzyme A (CoA), forming acetyl-CoA and inorganic phosphate.   Phosphotrans- acetylase plays an essential role in the conversion of acetyl-CoA to acetate and in the synthesis of ATP in fermentative anaerobes belonging to the domain Bacteria.  The structure of E.coli enzyme is rather close to the structure of its homologue from Bacillus subtilis 1TD9.   Phosphotransacetylase enzymes are considered potentially useful for biotechnology because of its application in the synthesis of polyhydroxybutyrate, a component of biodegradable polymer materials [Ref].
